If the world is ending…

…listen to more music!

Welcome to my first Spotify Discover Weekly playlist review, the first and probably the last time I ever do this because anyone who knows me knows how much I struggle to commit to something new… But while I’m actually here, I’ll get on with it.

For anyone who has been living under a rock, if you have Spotify, you can access a playlist called Discover Weekly, which refreshes every Monday with song suggestions based on your previous listening.

Just to set the scene, i’m writing this over the course of some tepid but sunny mornings while I wait for the bus to work, the perfect time to consume some of the algorithm’s finest hit or miss songs.

In no particular order, here are my top ten new favourite discoveries of the week.

You Hear Yes by Destroy Boys, Mannequin Pussy, Scowl

I think the first song in the Discover Weekly playlist is always a strange one. This has a weird sound, but the first listen gripped me, probably because it intrigued me. Listening to the lyrics, I realised that they’re actually very deep and the song has an important message behind it. In terms of similar sounding artists, Marmozets is the closest one I can pinpoint.

If The World is Ending by BEGINNERS

This is just a straight up bop. Vocals are spot on and it has a dream pop feel-good vibe. I will say though… I really dislike the album art. Maybe it’s just because I work in marketing and I’m a bit too picky.

Now It’s Over by Dogpark

This is my favourite discovery of the week because it is so BLOODY catchy. Kind of reminds me of The Black Keys crossed with Crash Kings. Would HIGHLY recommend this one.

Your Girl by Lissy Taylor

Took me a couple of listens to get into this due to it being slightly repetitive, but the chorus is particularly fantastic and her voice is incredible.

God Help Me Now by Ellur

These lyrics are very well written. I feel like this would be a great song to add to a late night chill playlist, or one to listen to when you’re sad and walking in the rain. There’s a key change just before the 2-minute mark which really gets your attention and lifts the song up.

Two Moons in Love by Atomic Life

This song is very energetic, I think I’ll add it to my running playlist. Again, it’s giving me Marmozets vibes. As you can tell I am really missing Marmozets…

Boyfriend by Teenage Dads

First of all, what a weird band name. I mean, it’s probably not the weirdest – there are definitely stranger ones out there. The chorus of this song is the only reason is the only reason I added it to my main playlist, because it’s catchy and sounds a hell of a lot like The Strokes. One thing about this song that does annoy me is the little sound effects at the start and end, because it makes me think my phone is making noises or disconnecting from my headphones…

Figure It Out by Hana Lili

Decent song but the bridge is the best part – unreal.

Bad Man by FIGHTMASTER

Yeah you could workout to this song. Or just bop along on the bus to it. Took me a few listens but then I really got into it, very catchy chorus.

Girls Make Me Wanna Die by The Aces

An upbeat and decent song, nothing too special but definitely one for the main playlist.

Thank for you reading my discover weekly review for W/C 16th September. This is the end.
